Is this a fuel pump problem?

check your fuel filter, they tend to clog up. you might find you need a ned fuel tank
 
Also, fuel pump ground & - believe it or not - condensor!
 
My 79 MGB is acting up. When going freeway speeds (55 mph+) the engine begins to miss and lose power as if it's not getting enough gas. Otherwise, after warming up, it runs superb. I've also noticed that when starting the car and turning the ignition key to on, the normally fast "ticking" sound that I hear from the fuel pump is now a very slow tick-tick-tick. The battery is fully charged, so that's not what's slowing the ticking of the fuel pump.

Not sure if these two items are related, but it sure seems to me that the problem is with the fule pump (or clogged fuel line).

Any thoughts?

Sorry, I feel I'm missing something...there's a condensor in the fuel pump for a 1979 MGB? I know there are points, but... Where is the condensor?

I shouldn't be thinking for Tony, but maybe the condensor he is refering to is in the distributor. It can cause the symptoms that you are describing.

Some older SU pumps had a condensor under the top cap. It prevented the points in the pump from arcing. It could go bad & cause the pump points to stick or burn. Newer pumps had a diode instead.

Thank you, Dave...yep, I'm talking about the condesnor in the distributor...if its bad, your car wil act like its acting & eventually will just go dead on side of road...however, after a few minutes it'll start again....
 
I had trouble with my fuel pump once after I took my license plate off. That is where the ground for the pump is. Under one of the license plate bolts on the inside of the boot.

Since I have electronic ignition, condensor issue becomes moot. For now, I think I'll focus on replacing diaphragm and point set on the fuel pump.

Moss shows 2 diaphragms...one with a 3" shaft and one with a 2 3/8" shaft. Any way to tell which one is on my fuel pump without taking it apart? The current pump I have in the car is from Moss, their part #377-165 and SU's part#AZX 1307.
