You aren't alone, I've had plenty of optical drive failures. Usually they just get to where the heads are going back and forth trying to read, only to eventually have Windows say "error reading from disc". One other didn't spin up anymore, just made some anemic groans when it tried to spin up.
One of the more spectacular ones was when the ball bearing fell out of the spindle motor, and the disc, while spinning furiously, ground into the tray because it got crooked. Made all sorts of interesting noises and literally ground to a screeching halt. When I pried the tray open there were shreds of plastic on the tray, and when I took the drive out I found the ball bearing floating around inside the case. Intrestingly, only the edge of the disc was scuffed, and it still worked fine in other drives.
The latest one seems to be the DVD writer on my laptop; it has trouble reading DVDs. I think there might be hope for it though; if I push the head all the way to the end of the travel before I put the disc in, then it reads. Otherwise, I just put a disc in, hear the head move several times, and it acts like there's no disc. Maybe there's just some crud somewhere that's keeping the servo from moving the head all the way home. It sounds more promising than the $150 "refurbished" replacement drive.
