Intro: Dan and Ethel

Heyo, I'm Dan (danindetroit on MGE). I'm originally South African; currently, I live in the Detroit metro area in the USA.

My car, Ethel, is a labor of love for my wife and I. It originally belonged to her late father. When we started working on it, it had been garaged for 10 years and on jacks for 3 - nothing was working. Initially, I just wanted it out of the garage so I could put my own car inside. I had to figure out how to move it, which involved learning how to release the tension on the handbrake cable (gosh that was a dirty job). Then I had to start it up, which involved re-setting the timing and replacing/bleeding the clutch slave cylinder. Once I heard that BMC B-series start up, I fell in love and never looked back.

Currently, Ethel is configured as follows:

  • 1978 US-spec MGB Roadster w/original Russet Brown paint,
  • Desmogged,
  • ZS carb replaced with HIF44
  • Schlemmer-built Lucas 25D distributor,
  • New AP brakes all 'round,
  • Custom steering wheel and center console cushion
We've been at Mad Dogs and Englishmen, as well as University Motors Summer Party 2023. I'm chronicling our adventures as we bring this car back to life on Instagram (@ethel_the_mgb).

great story and great prgress - welcome!

Welcome to BCF.

"tiny brown rocket" - great description!

Good to have you with us. As many of us don't use Instagram or other social media, you might want to make some of your restoration story public.

Thank you! There will be more - this car is known for being a gremlin hive (more than most).
"My Little British Car runs perfectly" - said no one ever. :ROFLMAO: I checked Roget's Thesaurus and 'Gremlin Hive' is a synonym for MGB (and Triumph and Midget ....)
