Darn frustrating. I've measured my ISP's download speed and usually get around 15 mbps. But it takes several seconds to load just about any web page other than "pure text". (maybe slow due to ads? flash? congestion? etc.)

How long does it take before you see the video start, on this CNN page?

Same here. And I have a strong cable connection.

It's all the advert nonsense and "phishing" stuff that is packaged with modern internet pages. Even my innocent-looking community college uses data-mining to see who's visiting their website.

Wouldn't it be great if all webpages had the option of being delivered "text only" (and skip all the other crap)?

The marketing and advert folks have figured out how to "take advantage" of the higher speeds.....thus slowing downloads to a crawl similar to my old 14.4 modem.

For many, many reasons, I miss the good old days of the internet when things were simpler (I have to admit, BCF reliably downloads quickly and smoothly....unlike a lot of other sites).

Hi Tom,
That's WAY too slow for 15 MBPS. That page loaded in less than 2 seconds for me, and I'm usually around 10 MBPS. I suspect (because I've been told by others who know these things) that its your processor speed. There's a fair amount of cpu time necessary to correctly render a page like that, and if you're using an older computer, that might be the problem. Also, Chrome seems to be fastest browser for me.

Takes 30 seconds for me.

About 15 seconds for me with Ghostery on Firefox turned off. About 5 seconds with Ghostery turned on. Looks like a bunch of tracking and adds slow this site down.

Edit: 22MPS at this time with a 64ms ping. Ghostery found 19 trackers on the CNN site. I run Solidworks on this computer with no problem so the CPU power is adequate, even though it's considered slow by modern standards. (1.9 mhz dual core and 8meg ram) Edit: 8G ram

I just realized that you asked how long before the video started, not how long til the page loaded. More like 5 seconds til the video started for me.

This is interesting ... some folks start the video in under 5 seconds. Others (like me) over 20 seconds.

I'm using the latest Chrome browser. I've tried this test both with and without Ad Blocker plugin. Didn't use Ghostery. My Adblock shows 16 ads were blocked on that page.

Would be interesting to know which o/s, browser, and plug-ins everyone uses, and how they speed/slow the page load.

5 to 10 s range for me. 45MB connection here, and a devout adblock+ user. seriously adblock+ (available for Firefox and Chrome) has made most sites load 2x faster. I know a lot of sites get revenue from ads but when 75% of the site content is ad related i'd rather not go there. using adblock+ allows me to quickly see the lack of valuable content.

Pentium 2.86G, 2G ram. Fedora Linux latest v.19 build. Google Chrome 34.

Tried the test link with and without AdBlock, with and without Ghostery, with and without both. No appreciable difference. Wondering about Nial's setup also, as he seems to have similar slow response to the test link. Ghostery shows 17 hits on that page when active.
