Internet Blackout

Humans... Convenience over security. The IoT idea is a good example. And folks who buy into this stuff without understanding are a real problem. Anything with an IP addy gets username/password changed before it gets permission to connect. Even that is no guarantee, as too many devices use hardware/firmware with a built-in "backdoor" to the management warez. feh.

Why on earth should anyone need to access their toaster from a cell 'phone, anyway.

โ€œNo one in this world, so far as I know โ€” and I have searched the records for years, and employed agents to help me โ€” has ever lost money by underestimating the intelligence of the great masses of the plain people. Nor has anyone ever lost public office thereby."

H. L. Mencken (one of my heroes!)

Sometimes it seems we're buying lots of "toys", without thinking about the long term. Good grief - adding Internet of Things devices that don't allow passwords to be changed from the default?

A student of mine (age 30) says his girlfriend can't hold a conversation or make eye to eye contact. She has to "text" him, even when they're sitting at dinner together.

I thought about getting a Nest thermostat so I could adjust temperature away from home, but then I thought about it again and decided I could live without it.

Bought one this summer at a yard sale for $1. The seller had had an issue, called tech support and the person knew every time the temp had changed - she figured it was TMI

Yep. I agree. I have a decent programmable thermostat that does just fine. And oh by the way, be sure to put tape on your computer camera lest some guy in Ukraine might see you prancing around in your undies.
