The last time I did an interior I used 1/8" masonite for the backer. This worked well but was the dickens to get a staple into. I've been looking at Lowes and Home Depot, the thinnest plywood I've found is 5MM luaun. What has everyone else been using?
 
Someone suggested foam sign material a while back. Nort sure how well it staples but it does glue and is waterproof.
 
There is tempered and untempered Masonite. The tempered is harder and more waterproof. You won't have troubles getting staples into untempered.

I just bought a sheet of 1/8 "hardboard" as they call it now.
Same as Masonite which is/was a brand name.
The panels were 1/8" 5mm or 1/4" is too thick and so is 1/4" foam, it has to be very thin foam and you can get that in the flooring section of Home Depot too. the underlayment for Pergo laminate flooring is perfect.
Anything more than this will make the panels too thick and the door latch cover and window cranks will not work.
