You can see that golden-age of British production in the 1950s.
 
Fascinating. I was surprised how long France stayed in the top half. I was surprised that Japan outpaced the USA at least a decade sooner than I would have expected. I also suspect that it is slightly more complicated than just the chart. For instance Canada has probably produced less than 10000 cars of its own factory ever. Bricklin/Manic GT/ McLaughlin and a few early small manufacturers - after that only the big 3 - so, it might say Canada but is really the USA, likewise Spain, cars under license probably Brazil and maybe even China.

But still quite an interesting infographic
 
I think that France is still strong, but by the time Peugeot no longer imported to the USA they were essentially done (early 1990s?).
It surprised me that the USA came back to lead Japan... but, whoa, the rise of China (to ENORMOUS numbers) was stunning.
 
Mark - that is interesting! I assume that it's showing the total number of cars rolling off the lines in each country, regardless of the nationality of the corporation producing the cars.

The rise in standard of living in China is amazing, reflected in the car output.

It would be interesting to know within each on, homegrown manufacturers as opposed to license built or foriegn owners in different countires, like Toyota plants in the US for example. Which way would they count?? Or should they be both??
 
Tough to know how all this was produced. I suspect it does not reflect manufacture in foreign countries. It's probably only safe to assume it's about brand production only.
 
I'm thinking that is production in the country, regardless of brand. I think US automakers account for most of Canada's and Mexico's production.
