It is my understaning that the spit six conversion doesn't actually throw off the weight distribution much, and it is farily easy to do as the GT6 is pretty much the same car as the spitfire.

P.S. you don't want more than about 150 hp max in your car or else you could easily mess up your rear end.
 
the GT6 is heavy, heavy. About the same as a small block Ford V8. The GT6 is less nose heavy with the extra rear body work. The hot ticket for a Spitfire would be either a Corolla GTS 1.6L twin cam 4 banger or a 12A or 13B Mazda Rotary.
 
I like the looks of Spitfires, but would want a bit more power than is really doable with the 4 cylinder engine that comes in them.

I have seen the "spitsix" conversions, but it seems like it would seriously throw off the weight distribution in the car, as well as looking a bit tight in there.

Something I thought of, but have not seen, is why not put something like a Triumph Sprint engine in there?
Its much smaller than the inline 6 engine, probably around the same weight as the 4 banger and would definatly out perform the 6 banger.
It seems that engine and transmission mountings would be fairly easy to fabricate, and would keep things "in the family".

I forsee many problems witha Sprint engine, as it is designed as a slant engine. The Dolomite is quite a wide car so I would guess that major work would be requird to fit it in a Spitfire.
Don't be so dismissive of the 'old six' engine, it can be made to perform pretty well. In my part of the world the injection 2.5 has about 20 hp more than a Sprint and lots of torque. The 2 litre is a smoother engine than the 2.5 and can be made to perform very well. As for the other engine suggestions, who needs a bastard car?.

Right on, piman. The sprint engine would be to much work for the return. The 2litre 6 is smooth, but so is the 2.5. I have done several Spit 6 conversions, not to awful hard. My last was the 2.5 TR6 conversion with some performance upgrades and GT6 O/D. If I ever do another Spit 6 job, will only do the TR6 engine. Has the feel of a Lotus, and with Upgraded front susp handles very well. By the way the TR6 engine is very under stressed, so has lots of potential for H.P. gains
 
I hope there really isn't a dumb question , but what do you guy's do about the drive shaft and rear end?
Are you changing to something like a coil over conversion with different rear axel? Is the original rear end stock gear ratio, and suspension components up to the job of the increase in H.P.?
I know some of you guy's/ gal's are puttin GM 6's in the front end of some of these LBC's, what's the secret?

In the UK there is a Ford Zetec conversion for Spitfires.

Or so my Spitfire-owning brother-in-law tells me.

So what about a Focus/Mondeo 2-litre in a Spit?
 
I wonder if anyone has put a Miata drivetrain in one. Should fit, provide useful power, etc.
