I just spent a pleasant interlude reading the BMC Factory Special Tuning Manual.
The kicker was the price list, circa 1977. BTA 940 competition rear axles for $59.50 each, or a complete factory, big valve, race prepped 1275 head for $515.00.
Lots of good information in there, including a complete parts list for the front disc brake conversion on a Bugeye, or the parts required to install a ribcase trans to a 948.
Bittersweet memories, for sure.

($59 race axles.....that was a *long* time ago!)
 
Has anyone ever seen these axles? If so, what is the difference?
I assume that there is more material at the end, either on the inside or outside.
Is there some easy way of telling the difference?
How rare are these things?

One last question: Is there any other place to get upgraded ones other than Winners Circle?

Uk-made competion axles have flanges retained by splines and nut instead of stock taper, Flange and shaft made from much stronger steels that stock axles.
 
Splines on both ends of the axle? And a flange that slides over these w/ a lock nut?

Like the Winners Circle one, except that the ends are secured w/ a nut rather than being welded?

What about their present day availability?
 
Have no clue on availability but a quick call to Moss would settle that or ask Tony to check availability and price.

WTN, The BTA 940 axles are made of a higher grade steel than the stock ones were. They are getting scarce, but you still find them occasionally.
Huffaker Engineering sells the best axles out there.

I thought Huffaker sold axles, but last I checked, their webpage was quite a bit out of date (2002?). Wasn't sure if they still carried the stuff.
 
Oh, I can bat that Moss price by a whole bunch!
