Was driving home this afternoon, stopped at a stop sign about 1 1/2 blocks from the house, looked to the right - nothing. Looked to the left just in time to see a wheel with rim roll through the intersection, knock a couple blocks off a garden wall and run into the house. Stopped, went back and there in the middle of the road was a VW Golf on three wheels - It had just come off.

Scooted home, picked up my floor jack - got it jacked up, went back and found the centring ring and the guy found four of five wheel bolts. 25 minutes later, we were good to go. Our hunch is that someone was trying to steal the rims - they were aftermarket and kind of nice. However, in the midst of this realized.

1. he had no idea where his car jack actually went - and we had to use it to get clearance to use mine.

2. his lug wrench was the right size - it just didn't fit the holes for the lugs on the car.

What did we learn here?

1.figure out how your jack works in daylight in your driveway.

2. if you buy aftermarket rims - make sure the lug wrench fits.

He was fortunate - daylight, dry, little traffic - night time on the highway in the rain I don't want to speculate.
