Interchangeable Water Pumps?

To follow-up on my previous question on water pumps, Moss sent me the older pump / pulley for my BJ8. Does it matter which I use? The only difference seems to be the the older style pump doesn't extend out as far - 1/4 inch difference? It seems to mate to the block exactly the same way.

Also, I had a 3/8 belt on the car and the new 1/2 belt seems a little to wide for the crankshaft pulley.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

id save myself the heartburn and send it back for the correct pump or rebuild the original, i know there will be folks here that will testify to the fact that theyve tried rebuilding these without success because the pump is to old, wouldnt trust it, etc, etc, it would be best to find an n.o.s. pump but there arent many of them around, i have rebuilt these and never had a leak, if i couldnt get the correct new one id at least try a rebuild, ive seen the new ones on ebay.
