Insurance on Chevy Truck

It's been a while since I posted - been busy with my non-functioning Healey and other of life's catastrophies lately. Also working on getting a '56 Chevy pickup with hydramatic back on the road. (Won't that look cool trailering my Healey down the road?) The truck will be needing engine work. The original is a 283. If that is replaced with a stock 350, JC Taylor calls it a "modified" and ups the rate from about $80 to $220, saying it has something to do with that engine not being originally available for that truck, and/or the increased horsepower. It's not that the increase is going to bring the project to a screeching halt, but just curious - do all the insurance companies rate a vehicle differently if a larger-than-original engine is used?

I'm sure they do... But I'd imagine that lots of owners have also "forgotten" to tell the insurance company that the engine was swapped also.

I have a swapped engine (1275)in my BE and it upped the rate by about $100.

If you happen to tell them...some might not even insure it at all.

Ever notice how much a 283 looks juuuuuuust like a 350? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

You need a new insurance company, all my agent asked was for
the VIN, and if it was going to be a daily driver. No questions
about whether the engine had been changed, or even what size
the engine was now...

Thanks to all who posted info and ideas. Hearing good things about them, I got a quote from Hagerty, who had a $30 difference between stock (265, not 283 as previously stated) and replacement 350 engine, altho when I called back with some questions and spoke to another agent was told that as long and the hp increase was not excessive, the replacement engine woud be rated at the lower premium. They want a picture of the truck and the truck bed (not quite sure why the truck bed).

As it turns out, since the truck is in such good "original" condition (unlike my Healey), we're going to keep it intact and have the 265 rebuilt. It's taking a bit longer than expected, because like my Healey, some of the parts are hard to find.

Interesting - all I have on my '92 Sonoma is liability insurance....its so old, its not worth keeping full coverage.
