I picked up 4 studs that matched the size/threads on the bolts, screwed them into the captive nuts, placed the seat & packings over these, then removed the studs one at a time and replaced them with the proper bolt. That way, you can easily locate the captive nuts with the seat out of the way...
 
Joe, I just usually leave the studs in and put a nut on 'em

I put the bolts in then the carpet over them and feel where they are and cut 1/2" holes with a pair of sissors. The bolts will go right in.

hello, i have just installed new carpet in my wife's 71 b. everything went very well until i had to put the seat back in.Is their any easy way to get the bolts back threw the carpet and into the floor.i am about ready to drill the holes out and run bolts up from the bottom. thanks in advance for any help. ron

I got the seat in when I changed my carpet was to use an Exacto knife to cut the carpet where the studs went thru the floor. Much easier than scissors as I didn't have to lift and cut. just cut in the proper location. I am sure a good razor knife would work also.
 
When I installed new carpeting last winter I held a nail with a pair of pliers, heated the nail with a propane torch until it glowed red and then pushed it up from under the car through the bolt holes, burning a hole in the carpet. It gave me a perfect hole with the carpet laying flat and also sealed the edges so as not to fray later.
 
how'd you get it thru the front holes? a crossmember should be running under them
