Hey guys,
I got my J-type OD tranny back from the re-builder (he installed the OD on my new/old transmission) and it looks like I will be able to use the rear mounting plate on my 73 TR6, minus the part for the original trans mount. What size stud goes up into the OD casting, 3/8 inch, but what thread? And, the setup came without the anti-rattle strap. What the heck is it for and do I need it?

Dr Bill, the J type cant set on the plate for the non OD tranny. It must set lower in the frame using tabs that come off the lower frame flange. They should be there but may have to be welded on(easily fabricated).

My 73 had a bracket shaped like a table with two holes, sprung on two large canted rubber bumpers. Bolted to the front of this table was another table with wider-spread holes that held my non-OD tranny. Just removed the front table and the OD bolted right down into the rear table. Seems like it should work, the drive shaft bolted right up. Just my speedo cable is way too short. Guess they make one alot longer as I now have to enter at the right,rear of the OD into a dog-leg. It was a lot harder to install than the regular 4-speed: bulk, weight, etc. Gotta figure out the wiring next.

I put a Jtype in my not OD GT6. The Jtype rests on a homemade bracket that sits about 4 inches aft of the original transmission mount.

We fabricated a mount adapter out of two pieces of angle iron carefully welded together. Be sure to note exact height of the original mount and transfer that to the new mount.

Again, the key to the new mount adapter is to get the propshaft angle straight in to the gearbox. Assuming your old transmission mount did this, just note the exact height of the old mount and make your adapter the same height.
