Installing a Pertronix

I know the box will come with instructions but I am I looking forward to when installing this. I am going to make the 74 a reliable daily driver. I figure pertronix is the way to go on this. I will keep a spare dizzy in the trunk just in case something goes wrong.
 
Pretty straightforward, but check to see if it's ballasted or not, as the wiring will depend on whether it is or not. Don't leave the ignition on with the engine stopped for long periods, I hear they don't hold up well to that. I've been happy with the one I have.
 
I have a used positive ground Pertronix sitting in a cabinet. It works perfectly but I'll never use it because I have more trust in points! Let me know if they would help you out and we'll work a deal.
 
Did you buy the complete Pertronix dizzy or did you buy just the Ignitor module? I have Pertronix on our GT6 and I keep the original points and condenser in the boot. It's only a few minutes work to remove an installed Pertronix and go back to points if you have to.

As mentioned, the Ignitor module does not like being left on without the engine running. Limit such time to less than about 3 minutes and you'll be OK. Why would you ever want to turn on the ignition but not the engine... during static timing.
 
Thanks Steve. Both the GT and roadster are NG. So this is just a remove old & screw in new, type of install.
 
I'm gonig to Pertronix in everything I own...easy install...takes all of about an hour to remove the old & install the new! At most!

Just had a friend do a rebuild on a 74-75? Installed a Pertronix and couldn't get it running properly on all four. After fiddling with it for too long(he's paid hourly) he went back to points and condensor. No more problem


I do not trust pertronix after all that I've read about them on this forum and elsewhere. I do trust my Crane/Allison.
 
Pertronix are fairly reliable devices, but they do go bad. When they go bad, the car stops running suddenly and without warning.

Points are fairly reliable devices, but they also go bad. When they go bad, they do it slowly and with lots of warning, and can often be fixed with a screwdriver and / or nail file.

The most unreliable component in the ignition system is the condenser, but it isn't due to the design of the piece. It's the crappy after market units being sold. If yours has lasted more than a month, then chances are it will continue working for years. Don't replace it until you have to!
 
Only time I'll replace a condenser is if the points are badly pitted or the thing has failed outright.
