there isa lot of clatter down there when the car starts. It did start instantly though compared to the stock starter. I wonder what could be clattering??? I guess I will have to pull the inspection cover to see if I can see anything down there? This starter came with a jump wire that goes from a 3/16 spade terminal to the large bolts terminal on the starter that you use if you want to retain the TR3 remote solenoid. The connection at the spade terminal seemed a little on the flimsy side? I wonder what would happen if that wire got knocked partially loose but was still connected would the starter solenoid and the remote solenoid activate at the same time? The motor ran very briefly before I shut it off. I wonder if the noise is coming from the clutch area. I changed the clutch when I had the transmission out. It's always something????
 
Clattering is likely a mis-match of the starter pinion to ring gear teeth. Check with the starter dealer to make sure you got the proper starter for the ring gear you are using. If it is the correct starter then you may have to shim it to align the teeth.
 
I have the stock ring gear in my 3 which has 41 teeth but I am using a TR6 box. When I ordered the starter I figured the TR3 starter from British Starters that I ordered would match up to the ring gear as I have never had any problem with the stock 3 starter meshing. I was careful to install the stock spacer and it was mentioned in the assembly instructions to use it as well. I tried starting the car one more time tonight and it sounded like a frikken buzz saw! That's got to be metal to metal. Is it possible I need an additional spacer as well as the other one? I will contact the supplier tonight. I guess the best thing to do is pull the inspection panel and see if there is damage.
 
Found out on AI that the early TR3 has a 91 tooth ring and a 9 tooth starter pinion........the later 59 TR3 (A?) had a 90 tooth ring gear that was bolt on. You were on the right track John.
