What is the secret to compressing the rubber bushings so that the arms of the lever shock will go over them? Help out a novice here!

Remobe the bolt that holds the center of the two arms together, then drive a good sized screwdriver blade between the arms at that point to spread the arms sufficiently to get thends over the bushings. Get the pivot bolt in place, then remove the screwdriver and reinstall the bolt and tighten everything down.
Cheers,

In addition to removing the above clamp bolt:
One of the two arms is clamped to it's pivot. It helps to remove this clamp bolt & slide the arm away from the body a bit. When you get the arms over the rubber, tighten the center bolt, insert the end clamp bolt back in & through it's C shaped cutaway slot in the pivot arm, & tighten. Much easier than just springing the arms apart.
