I'm very carefully taking apart the control head with the aid of Randall's post "The TR3 Control Head." What causes the stator tube to not keep the head from turning and cause the control head wires to twist and bunch up?

The stator tube is held in position by the tube nut at the bottom end of the stator tube. The control head is held from turning by the tube from the control head that is inserted into the stator tube.

Is it possible that the tube from the control head can work itself loose from the stator tube and move around? If so can it be "staked" somehow to keep it in place?

In the top of the stator tube there is a notch that a raised portion on the tube from the control head fits into. As long as the stator tube is not broken then the answer is NO.
