Inside Door Handle

So...after a weeklong attempt to attach the door handle to the inside of my BN6 and finally getting it attached of course I then discover that something has become dislodged and moving the handle does not unlock the door. I can feel that the long rod is still attached and moves when I move the handle. The outside door handle still works fine.

Does anyone have some suggestions on what has become dislodged and how to fix it? Pictures perhaps?

Please tell me that I don't have to remove the door panel (and thus also remove that :censored: door handle that I finally attached)!

Thanks!
Chet

Chet, the rod probably isn't being pulled far enough to disengage from the catch. With the door open see how much it's moving and compare with your other door. Is your catch fully tightened? Is the gap at the back of the door too tight? Or it could just be wear in the linkage, meaning disassembly, unfortunately.

Thanks for the suggestions Jack. I think you may be on to something that the rod isn’t being pulled far enough to disengage the catch. Today I was at my shop and noticed that the door loosened very slightly when I pulled on the handle. It worked fine before I managed to put that dreaded pin in the handle to hold it on. Perhaps the entire handle/escutcheon is being held too tightly to the door and not allowing it to turn far enough. I’ll inspect closer tomorrow...

Don't feel special when it comes to replacing the pin for the handle. New door cards are thicker than the originals so what should be a simple job becomes next to impossible. I enlarge the holes for the handles to give me a little more clearance.

There is a special place in **** reserved for the genius who came up with those little pins for the door handles. I found that using an icepick to hold them open makes a terrible job a little easier.

Hi All,

Happy to report that Jack was exactly correct. For some reason the door handle was not pulling the lock far enough. Rather than take everything apart (I will do ANYTHING to avoid again having to install that door handle again!) I was able to remove just the top portion of the panel inside the door which gave me sufficient access to wrap a wire around the slot of the bar that attaches the handle to the door lock. Problem solved (hopefully assuming that wire remains in place!).

My hands may take a few days to recover from the contortions I had to put them through to get that wire attached....

Just another day in the Classic Healey Experience
