Inside an A-Series Engine

That is GREAT but why would they be running the engine backwards??!! The fan is supposed to be pushing air (Mini) and the distributor is turning backwards---

It's rotating anti-clockwise. Must be something special about Irish Minis.

Yes, this was an attempt at a reduced emmissions engine design by Guiness known as the "pint cycle" or "draught stroke" engine. :thirsty: :hammer:

The idea was to mount the carbs on the end of the tailpipe. That's why they spun it backwards. If you look closely, you can see the exhast valve opening on the intake stroke.

Here's a brief overview of the theory: :thirsty:The forward motion of the car was thought to counteract the direction and velocity of the incomming air/fuel charge travelling up the exhast pipe. This reduced the ammount of air/ fuel charge entering the engine and the resulting exhast polutants.

The faster you went, the less fuel you consumed and exhast you produced. :thirsty:

Emissions were believed to be futher reduced by the exhast gases now travelling through the intake mainfold and out the air filters, reducing emissions even further.

They scrapped the whole project after the first test run.

Upon launching the car in fist gear, the car slammed through the Pub wall directly behind it and into the cooler, thus shutting the Pub down permantenly. Local authorities moved quickly and had the entire project staff executed.........

.......a memorial service was held later that day for the Pub.

Sounds reasonable to me. Especially the part about the memorial service for the pub.

After I've spent an evening in an Irish pub, I can't really tell which way things are spinning, and I care even less.
