I have areas between my porch columns at the top that are made out of ~7/16" Hardi Board.
These are hollow.
I want to hang something from this and need a piece of hardware I can insert into it to screw a j bolt to it.
J bolt will be ~1/4"
Looked at McMaster but nothing jumped out
Any ideas?


By the way this is above your head and will hang down
 
HardiBoard is great stuff but hanging anything more than a few pounds, without a brace or re-enforcement would worry me.
 
Depends on the thickness of Hardy Board and how much weight you want to hang on it! Usually board thickness is 3/4 inch where columns set under it, as in porch columns. To install J hooks, drill a pilot hole where you want the hook slightly smaller than the hook threads, screw the hook in and your ready to go. PJ
 
Should have mentioned it is like soffit material.
Stuck a measuring tool in an existing hole and seems only about 7/16.
We have potted plants hanging from existing hooks from the previous owners.
There are a couple of empty holes besides the ones being used and I figure they stripped out

For the next hook it will only have a glass hummingbird feeder hanging from it so not much weight.
It's the plants hooks that I figure I will need to redo
 
Was at Lowes scoping out supplies and found the Hardi Board soffit material.
It is 3/8+.
Didn't really say on the tag
 
Perhaps you could use a hollow wall anchor of the proper grip length and thread to do the job:

Once the anchor has been secured in place, remove the screw and replace it with a J- or eye bolt with the correct machine threads. A jam nut on the bolt and up against the anchor should keep it from turning or loosening.
 
The problem with those, I think, is that on the Hardi Board it will not pierce the surface as it is really hard.
So I think it will just spin

Should not be a problem as it doesn't take much to bite. You can also buy them with spring loaded butterfly nuts.
 
How about something like this. The toggle will spread the load over a larger area of the board. image.jpg
 
Never been a fan of those.
They should be outlawed.
Take it from a guy whose livelihood entailed removing and reinstalling objects from walls
