Inner tie rod ends

Is it necessary to remove the steering rack to replace the inner tie rod ends? I asking about the pieces that connnect the steering rack to the ball joints. I bought the pieces in 2002 from Rimmer Brothers and I figure I want to get them on before the trip to Triumphest in October.

I borrowed a proper ball joint remover those came apart easily- it sure pays to have the correct tool!

Anyway thanks for any input. T.T.

Not necessary on the Stag; but I don't know about other Triumphs. The Stag also has shims in there that may need to be adjusted.

Be sure you use a wrench to hold the rack while turning the nuts. If you let the pinion take the force, it may break.

They will come off a TR6 without removing the rack. Make sure you have new tab lock washers. You don't want to be thankful that it disconnected at 5 mph in a freshly asphalted parking lot on a 96 degree day. Ask me how I know. You don't want to be unthankful either, or....

Yes, I believe they are left to loosen, but you may have the same problem as I did on an old TR4 rack - they can be on very tight. I wound up ruining one of the nuts in taking it off. Not sure what the best advice is but make sure you use wrenches that are a good fit.

Yes, I just needed more effeort to loosen the nuts on the steering rack. I could be back on the road if I can get my socket set back from my neighbor- I need to torque the steering arm to ball joint nuts. Then to a shop for alignment. I did not replace any tab washers- I didn't have to remove that part of the added pieces. Thanks for all your help. T.T.
