TR4/4A Inner frame coating

Good morning all. I picked up a restored 71 TR6 frame yesterday and other than a few storage scrapes and chips it's in great shape. I'm wondering about using any of the internal frame coatings and if it's necessary or just a good idea. I've used Eastwoods in the past on my Bugeye sills and orher known rot areas, but is it worth doing on these frames?

I didn't put anything on mine. The rationale was that since it didn't rust in the last 50 plus years out in the weather, and it would most likely be inside for the most part for the next 50, there was little need. It is also very difficult to get a good coat on all of the inside.
When I took out the inner sill on the same Tr3, that had a small rust hole in the front, I cut it open to examine the inside. I found lots of shiny un-coated steel and very little rust.

If I were re doing a TR I would not hesitate to buy 4 or 5 gallons of Rusfree rustproofing from a good auto body paint store . Spend some time with your set up and fill the main chassis with the rustproofing , roll it over and drain it out ( recapture ). I do Healeys like this. Since the insides were never protected its only a matter of time ... Spraying with wands just won't do it, you need to get some material on the inner surfaces.

There is a product called "Fluid Film " that works great. It is lanolin based, sold in a spray can or by the gallon. From what I'm told, the old school farmers coated their machinery that had to sit outside to protect it from rusting. I use an old primer gun to spray the underside of my wife's car, and I also fill the wheel wells of my truck with it once a year. I've seen a spray wand kit on Amazon that looks like it will work great to get inside a frame. I intend to do my TR6 frame when I'm ready. A little extra protection can't hurt.

Thanks for all the information! This is the product I used on my Bugeye and one can covered the inside of the sills with two coats each. The spray nozzle did a great job of spraying in 360*...two cans may take care of the TR6 frame.

Hi Rut
I used the same Eastwood product and thought it did a good job. It is supposed to lock down and convert existing rust and prevent future rust. I didn't do a thorough inspection but the included spray want and nozzle sprayed in all directions.

Me too. Just be aware that you will use a couple of cans and it will run out as a fluid so cover both yourself and whatever surface the car is on when you apply it.
