How do I get the ignition switch off the colume on a 77 MGB?
It looks like it is rivited on and I need to put it on another car?

What I had to do in my 74 was use a Dremel to cut a horizontal slot into each of the sheer bolts on top. I was then able to carefully put a screwdriver in and remove it like a screw, being careful to not strip the slot I drilled. After that the steering lock assembly should fall free from the column, and then you can remove the switch itself via a small screw on the bottom.

Do you need to remove the lock and the ignition switch or just the switch? There is a small set screw holding the switch to the lock. Remove the screw and unplug the switch to remove just the switch.

Ah, good point! That could save lots of time and effort. I couldn't remember if the screw holding in the switch was accessible without removing the lock.

No, I need the whole thing. The switch on my 66/76 MGB is some after market switch and doesn't allow the plastic cover to fit correctly causing interferance with the turn signal arm.

Success! I couldn't wait for the weekend so got out the dremel, cut the slots and unscrewed the shear bolts and installed the switch in the 66/76! Thanks for all the help, this forum is great!

Now, take one of those bolts to your local hardware store & buy proper ones with heads a socket will work on...

Allen head cap screws work well for it, too. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

If it is anything like a 73' The two clamp bolt heads were snapped off to prevent theft or something, I can't remember. What I do remember is that I used a sharp metal punch and ball pein hammer. On an anti-clockwise angle you keep tapping the chisel (maybe whacking) until the bolts actually start unscrewing.
