GT6 Increasing GT6 compression...opinions and advice

after reading my competition prep manual for the umpteenth time, i'm really starting to think about skimming my block and head to increase my compression ration to at least 9 to 1 (from a supposed 8 to 1). here are the questions for today:

First, i was thinking of going up to 9.25 to 1 since early GT6's seemed to exist nicely at this point for some time. What kind of gas will this require and what are the upsides to going a bit higher or lower?

Second, i am going to skim the block to the level of the pistons, do i need to get a regular GT6 head gasket instead of my recessed bore gasket? and what abuot my change in piston to .02? (new to engine rebuilding!)

third, i want to get some opinions on if this is all worth it. i figure it will be easier now then after i put it all back together and back in the car and the increase in power is always nice. overall, i want a very easygoing street car that can keep up with todays traffic needs. oh, and my only real performance changes is a sports exhaust system with the regular manifold, maybe k&n's in the future too.

oh, and how easy is it to have my block restamped? and general cost of a head and block skim?

thanks for the info guys, you're all a treasure trove of information.

Not very sexy, but you might want to give a re-curved distributor with a Pertronix a try first. You can always use it with a rebuilt/enhanced engine anyway, but MUCH cheaper to get started.

I was pleasantly shocked at the difference it made on the TR6.

i've already got a redone dizzy with a plate for points and for pertronix. and i'd love to try it out too, but the engine is in the shop waiting for a single valve collar.

Ah - I'll have to defer to others on the skimming Q&A. I don't have any experience with that and don't want to offer guesswork.

Good luck!

If you have a later O-Ring block then you can take very little from the top without getting into trouble.

wow.

quite a read Tom, really gives you the meat and potatoes. i love how he adds the gravy right at the end with a suggested list of order, which leads me to cool my jets.

Since i haven't committed to "marrying" this gt6, i think i'm going to zip her up how she came and leave any major work for a little later down the road, enjoying her all the way there.

LET TRIUMPH ENJOYMENT CONTINUE!
