In trying to check out the heater, I now need keys

HI
When I got the car, it did not come with keys, the PO just used a small screwdriver. That's what I had been doing. The other day while working on the heater, I noticed that the fan would would come on when the switch was operated even with the ignition switch in the off position. So I was checking into that I notice the center was depressed and I messed with it and it popped out. Now a screwdriver won't turn it. Looks like I need a key, to be inserted and then pushed in and turned.
Is this correct?
What lock should I use to get a number off of? Is the drivers door the same as the ignition?
Will most key smiths be able to make some kind of a key?
Any information would be appreciated.
Thanks

Door key is different than an MGB ignition.

Take the sreering column cowl off & remove the entire steering lock...take it to a locksmith & he can make a key.....there are 2 break-away studs holding the assembly to the column....use a Dremel to cut a screwdriver slot into each & then use a large screwdriver to remove them....when you go to replace the lock, replace those 2 studs with a common bolt.

The locksmiths "I" know will not cut a key from a carried in ignition switch. In fact, most of the yeahoos around me couldn't do it if they were will to. If you can get the code, there is one man that will cut keys from a code. BritishCarKeys.com
My keys went missing for my E-type. I wrote to the heritage trust people, proved I was the owner and the sent me the key codes in the mail free of charge. I gave the codes to Pete and bingo, new working keys in a couple of days. If you can't find the codes, Pete might be able to set you up. Give him a call, (410) 750-2352. He's a super guy and his prices are good.

(I hadn't seen that Triple C website before, thanks for the link)

Miss Agathas key came from that web site. $20 for two. I provided the number from the front of the switch. Couple of days did it. Spoke with a nice lady who was very helpful.

To All
I spoke to the folks at Triple C and they could not help. For 1972 MGB's the keys came with a small tag when new that has the key number. Without that tag or a key, they cannot be made.
They sent me to https://bhive.tierranet.com/. He confirmed that keys could not be made with out the code and the code was not on the locks.
So I bought a lock and switch. I suppose I could also send to British heritage and get the code and if they have it have a key made and have a spare or something I could sell.
FWIW
Thanks

HRUMPH!

I just take my cylinders to my local old-time locksmith....he knows me....he goes back in his bin, finds the correct blank....does his little thing with the tumblers & cuts me a new key!
