Since I am famous for missing the obvious, I just wated to see if my reasoning makes sense. 2000 Intrepid, the last couple of weeks the interior lights go on randomly as I'm driving, never for more than a minute or so but usually only a second or two. I presume that a wire has worn through where the door opens and shuts since this is the only reason (other than me switching them on) that the interior lights would actually come on. I also presume it is likely at the door hinges as this seems the area that gets the most bending - any thoughts?

I'd say check the switches in the door jambs. Spray them with WD-40, push them in, see if they jiggle, etc.

Isn't the Intrepid a DCP car? On my Neon, there are little rubber buttons on the doors which are the contact points for the pin switches on the door jambs. If that's the case on your car, & the little button is missing, the closure of the switch will not be effective. It's a $0.25 or free replacement part at the junkyard.

I owned a 2000 Intrepid a few years ago – nice car, but I can’t recall ever having the problem. But wouldn't the door switches give a "Door Ajar" alarm indicator in addition to the lights coming on?

I’d look at the interior light switch. If I recall there is a dimmer switch that you can change the brightness of the dashboard with the uppermost (highest) setting actually turning on the interior lights.

Another thing I remember having a problem with my aftermarket alarm being affected by the automatic time delay dimmer for interior lights. The installer ended up having to disconnect/bypass the Alarms interior lights on detector.

Would the wires rubbing against each other (I presume something is worn) also cause the "door ajar" light to go on?

Anythings possible John.

I can't recall if the door ajar & interior lights share the same switch or not. Easy to check out by looking but assouming they share the same door switch, I just figured that if the interior lights are coming on but not the door ajar light then I would look at the light switch located on the *dash* board.

There may be more than one door switch.

On my Neon, the passenger side door has one pinswitch, & the driver's side door has two. I think one is for the interior light, the other for the 'your headlights are on' door dinger.

Check the door jamb switches on both the driver & passenger sides, & make sure that (if they're used on the Intrepid) the rubber buttons which mash the switches are in place on the door.
