ignition woes .

Not sure on a Healey, but a clutch disk was put in backwards on a friends MGA and the symptom was it would not disengage.

Im beginning to wonder if its possible to put the clutch disc in reversed and would things still go together with it reversed ?

YES However,
When you dismantled it you would see the springs on the disk have been severly worn on one side.

The clutch worked fine prior to me stripping the car and no worn springs . Im questioning if I installed it backwards by mistake and now that is why it wont allow me to put the car in gear with the engine running .
Im going to do some more bleeding this weekend to see if thats the issue .

NO

I am not sure I understand your answers Keoke, so apologies if I am misinterpreting, but if the clutch was put in backwards my understanding is that the car would not go into gear. If your clutch is not disengaging completely would also cause problems going into gear, so I would certainly make sure the hydraulics were bled properly before moving on to more drastic measure like pulling the tranny.

Well bleeding again diddnt work , gearbox is out , clutch is off . Small hub of clutch disc facing flywheel .
Is there a way to check the movement of the pressure plate ?
Friction disc moves freely on gearbox shaft all clean no burrs etc .

Were the dowel bolts in the right places?

Take the clutch cover and disc to a clutch shop and ask if they can put it on their tester. A five minute check can save hours of frustration.

Ok ..... Its fixed . The clutch disc was in backwards .
The manual says "the small hub faces the flywheel" So thats what I did . On My clutch disc the splined hub in the middle is basically flush on one side and then extends out on the other side about 1 1/2" so I put it in flush side to the flywheel ....WRONG.... Having figured that out I reversed it, put it all back together and now with the car in 4th gear clutch up I CANT turn the driveshaft coupling by hand ...clutch down I CAN spin the driveshaft coupling with my hand .
I guess my clutch disc is an aftermarket one so thats what confused me . Anyway its fixed just have to touch up all the inevitable paint chips from humping the gearbox in and out etc then its on to the next step

And I also figured out with a piece of 2x6 and 2 C clamps you can depress the diapram springs and check if the pressure plate releases and it does . With the diaphram springs compressed the pressure plate has about 1/32" free play . .
