Ignition lite

you folks have b een a great help in getting my 74 B together. so I have another question for all.
The ignition lite will not come on when I turn the key on. Have checked the bulb and it is ok and ther wiring also seems ok as if I pull the bulb out still in the socket and hook a ground wire to the socket the lite will come on but when I start the engine with this arrangement the lite will not go out. I have installed a voltmeter it reads about 12 1/2 volts at idle and 13 1/2 at 2000 rpm.

Have you connected the alternator correctly? Seems to me I did this once with my 1978 B and had the same results. I don't know what alternator plug configuration you have....mine was the "little-big-little" spade orientation, which allowed the wiring to be connected in two ways..."right or wrong". Other Lucas alternators have a "little-little-big" orientation, which does not allow this to happen.
