Ignition light on

I have a wierd one...my ignition light came on today and when I shut it off, stayed on. It came on the last time I drove it while driving, but after a stop at Friendly's for dessert, it seemed to work fine. Today, it came on after running for about 5 minutes. I went into the store, bought my stuff and came back out and it was still on. It stays on when the ignition switch is off or in the first postions (auxilary) but goes out when turned to run (running or not) or start postions...just the opposite of what it should do. The car starts and runs fine and everything electrical seems to work just fine, but the light is on sitting in my garage. I plugged the trickle charger in and it is still on. Oh please, some LUCAS guru, shed some light on the problem???

Disconnect the battery or unplug the alternator till you figure it out. If that happens in a generator car you will need to get the battery disconnected very quick. When the voltage regulator sticks in a generator car the light will come on with the key off and start to fry your wiring harness. I have a battery disconnect switch in all the cars i have with generators. If you unplug your alternator and the light goes out thats a good clue its the Alt! Bob

Yup, I have a disconnect for the battery that I pulled when I parked it. I will have to find someone who can check it for me. I have good voltage everywhere, everything works, and the battery seems to be charging...just that idiot light comes on when it shouldn't and doesn't when it should. I guess that makes me the idiot, huh?

Thanks for the help, guys.

Finally got time to pull the alternator. After loosening the mounting bolts, I noticed the funny looking ground wire terminal was loose, but was not sure it was loose before I started wrenching, so I went ahead and took it out to Adavnce Autoparts and tested it. It was fine. I put in back in, cleaning everything as I went, including the ground to the bracket...and everything was fine.

ALWAYS look fer th' "dumb stuff" first!!!

Glad it didn't take much to remedy.

Remember: these cars will usually work in th' bottom of a bucket of merde (pardon my French), even if they're only *half* right.
