Most of us New Englanders at the time were Patriots (rebels against the Crown); a minority were Tories (loyal to the Crown), many of whom slinked off to Canada after the Revolution. Very few of us were Whigs at the time, altho' the Whig party became the big New England party in the early 19th century.
