Was on a web site recently and saw a "sponsored" ad purporting to be Lowe's hardware store. This ad was advertising very nice, high end tool chests and carts for ridiculously low prices. When I (stupidly) clicked on the ad, it took me to what looked like a Lowes web page - complete with Lowes logo, but the address was "loweonline" (no "S").

Anyway, I have contacted Lowe's corporate and passed on the info and they sent it to their fraud department. Hopefully whoever is imitating Lowes will be stopped.

If it sounds/looks too good to be true, it only takes a few suckers to make it profitable. Sounds like the "I'm a 62 year old widower with no children, and need help moving funds from my Nigerian bank to the USA. If I split it with you 50%, could you help?"

At work, IT sends us regular training e-mails of of the sort Basil got to make sure we are kept aware of phishing attempts. If you click on it the "punishment" is getting re-assigned to take the e-mail / IP security review class. Do that a few times and you become very aware of the signs like a missing "S" or other tiny variations in the details.

One of the best checks I know, move the pointer over the link, and see what the actual URL is.

And carefully look at the URL. Like my example, they often use URLs that look very close to the real thing.

Got a text to my phone yesterday, wanted me to click a link to see how I'd been tagged in someone's photos. Didn't know the name that sent it or the link and hadn't been out to be photographed anyway, so.... Not going to happen....
