Well yesterday as I sai I got it running sort of. I could not do static timing cause I could not find lines on the pulley flange. Found the pointers. So this morning, I went back to basics, I regapped the plugs, decided to reset the carbs to factory. Then I noticed a loose bolt on the exhaust mainfold. I tightend all 4 !! Hmm, I looked down and I could SEE a loose bolt on the bell housing. I tightned ALL of them. Now I was getting mad at the previous owner. He pulled the motor and replaced the cluth. Put things back but did not tighten anything. EVEN the engine mount bolts were loose. I spent an hour checking and rechecking. I started it again, and put the timing light on, and looked for marks but to no avail...so I went to check the dizzy, and oops there were three bolts already loose....HOLY SMOKES CALL ME A DUMMY. Any way tighten up the collar bolts slacked off the adjuster a bit had a budyy sit in the car, turned the dizzt clockwise and vVROOM. Power and snap to the throttle. I was now reving at 2200 not 1200. Reset the idle and carbs , brought the idle down to about 900 and now when I step on the throttle she hesitates for just a touch and then pops up. Runs real smooth. When I shut her down there is a bit of dieseling/run on. Think I need to advance a bit more. I did notice too that the front damper does not rise as fast as the rear one. I think I need to check dash pot oil and advance on tuesday, But hey I could live with this. So thanks for all your help guys it was the timing or lack thereof causing my issues. Did we forget to mention the DPO? I guess we asssumed you knew about that potential problem since you used to own a Spitfire.

Trevor, I was just a bit to eager to get this little beast running. But NOT tightening the engine to the bell houseing ??? anyway, I have a small oil leak there, I will retightne soonest... I amd running at about 3/4 hot, siitn in a gargae on blocks, and at idle there is 30 lbs oil pressure. COOOOL !!

keep working, ur getting closer ; )
set ur timing by running the throttle
with one hand while turning ur dizzy
with the other...
when it goes vvrroom vrroom on acceleration,
youve got it ; )
shouldnt be no hesitation i dont think........z

OH IT GOES VROOOMMM VROOOM NOW, with only a little hesitation. The front damper does not rise at the same time as the back one, slow by about 1/2 second or 1/4 second, IS this a linkage adustment now,, yup we are down to fine tuning YEEEHAAAA !! primer goes on this week

Get em adjusted equal now. Must be right on of course.
