I don't have a manuel yet. What is the red light above the blue light on the dash of a 77 midget. Should it go on and off? Does it relate to the state of charge? Thanks-

Yes, it relates to the state of the charge. If it is staying on while you are running, turn off everything electrical and head for home because you're about to have a flat battery (personal experience). If should come on when you first turn the key and start the engine but should go off after the first time you rev the engine. If not, you're not taking a charge.

Means your battery is not being charged. That's the light Bugeye58 once referred to as the "Prepare to walk" light. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
My own car would run for 150 miles (75 of these with the headlights on low beam) with that light on before it would actually die. It died on me one night on the way to work. I had one of those small yellow jump start thingies in the trunk so I connected it to the battery and closed the hood. Started up and made it the rest of the way. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Sure felt relieved though once I'd installed a remanufactured alternator and the "Prepare to walk" light went out after starting the engine!!

just do a Bosch alt conversion, twice the power and it is practally plug and play. Even a Caveman could do it.....ooops sorry ..

Not an MG, but Diesela's "Prepare to Walk" light was intermittantly blinking this week. Charged her battery Thursday AM so "mum" could get to school... did the alternatorectomy this AM, along with replacing the half working right front caliper. yeah, yeah... I know: Replace 'em in pairs... I did the other side months ago. The Round Tuit just fell into my lap this mornin' /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

i bought one sinilar to this NAPA this is the one i bought Napa1
the nice thing about this is the plug is the same as the lucas. You have to move one wire from the plug to the alternater. The unit bolts right up, ok i had to grind a minute amount of the upper bracket. And i used the same belt. Took me all of about an hour start to finish. nice thing is it fits the motor size a little bit better than the larger GM unit. On the 1500 if you use a gm unit WATCHout for the hood clearance. My hood has a nice ding in it from the PO tha installed the GM unit. of all the money i have spent ....i consider this to be about the absolute best upgrade i have done. THings WORK! the car idles better the blinky blinks go blinkety blink blink and the wipers almost break the sound barrier on high, and the fan blows nice steady heat even at idle with everything on. And as a final bonus, the number one spark plug becomes easily accesable. FWIW
