identity phishing

It seems our main computer is victim to a Trojan horse virus aimed at identity theft. So I'm coming to you on my laptop as we have the desktop unit disconnected from the net untill we backup all our various files and I reformat the harddrive.
I know Doc. E. will yell at me, cause I diden't take much care in protecting my computer, but after the restart I'll be going all out.
So that's where I've been. that's what's up.
yeee hawwww.

Have you tried running Ad Aware? How about Spybot? Virus scan? You can at least run an online scan if your antivirus software isn't up to date or to snuff. Go to Symantec's site and do a free scan. Once you know what it is, you should be able to easily remove it.

I'v already researched it a bit. The info I have is that it's a "backdoor" type of program giving the phisher the ability to control my computer and get my info.
what happens is if I get on the net, I'll get kicked off, get an error message, then a new identity shows up by itsself at the log on screen labled "Adminestrator"(yes misspelled)
general consensus is, the safest way to get rid of it is to reformat......
I've got a new harddrive and a new cd writer that I've been putting off installing anyway

you and me both....... jerks

Wow. That has to be really dug in deep to be able to do such a thing. Any ideas on how something so severe got on the system? I fully agree with a complete low level format and reinstall of everything. I would even go through every file to be backed up and make sure they are all clean, especially text documents. Leave no stone unturned, and best of luck!

Sorry to hear you're going through it. Seems to me the
origin of the problem is some kind of marketing tactics
whereby folks just wanted to know where you go on the
net, what your interests are to target you as a client.

Obviously, this has gone way outta control. Had a
similar experience and went screaming to any law
enforcement types or government types, but to no avail.

Best of luck.

hmmm...

Suggestions for after you've *thoroughly* checked the backed up files as Steve said: AdAware, Spybot and AVG Free. Check the laptop too, and GET A FIREWALL! Not a software one, a machine. Go check out smoothwall.org.

...and I'll refrain from further comment... /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/devilgrin.gif

Doc, we have a router with a firewall , but stupidly I never updated the password. that pretty much negates most of it's offered protection.
I'm still learning.. I'm a far to trusting person. growing up in a small town can do that. I forget that the net is global, and I might as well be living in the most lawless slum. And here I am leaving my computer "parked on a side street, unlocked, withthe keys in the ignition".
Thanks for the advice all.

Try a program called "prevx"

https://www.prevx.com/

I have been using this for computer protection for about a year. Got it after I accidentally installed a trojan of some sort on my computer. First of all it cleaned up EVERYTHING that the nasties installed (quite a lot!) secondly it checks out every program that tries to run vs. a master list. If anything new shows up is also will let you know if it is known / dangerous etc.
The only downside is that it updates itself quite allot and that it slightly slows things down, but on any reasonable computer with a good high speed internet connection, the penalty is very small.

Spyware Blaster runs in the background. It is not a program that you use to see what you have but one that stops things getting in.

Another program which one would runs weekly or whenever is A Squared. Plus all the ones others have listed.

I have family in Banjo's town. They still don't lock their doors at night, or even if they're away for the day.

Those were the days...

I just went through a round of the same type thing, ended up formating my drive. I had been through this adventure before so I set my pc up with all of the needed perifial equipment drivers on one of my aux. drives. This way I can do a format and never touch a cd. Makes for convience, and I can format rather easily now. Oh B.T.W. I never store anything on my C:\ drive and I also instal programs to D:\ Program files. And yea you have to reinstal them to get them in your reg. Some I have on cd some I D/L off of the net. The ones I D/L I have also in D:\Downloads {makes instalation easy.}
And yes c: and d: are two entirely phisicaly seperate drives.
Anyway ..... YES I`d like to cut the jerks fingers off!!

'bots got no fingers, durnit. And the script-kiddies mostly hide out in Eastern Europe and China.

...but if I could get me mits on just one of 'em, they'd pay for the frustration caused by th' lot. Not enuff derogatory adjectives in existence for an adequate RAILING.

doc, ive also recently had a problem getting internet connection had to change to mozila to get online i just tried to download "spybot" but it gives a warning "exacutable file may contain viruses and malicious codes that can harm your computer" my norton anti virus warns me i have a problem does a full system scan but doesnt explain how to fix it. any person spending time needlessly harming others computers should be castrated and have that removed body part skin grafted to their chin so they could be identified when ever in public. im waiting to have the resident "wiz kid" my son get this all straight for me. /bcforum/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wall.gif
