Identify a GM V6

I have a GM V6 and need to ID so I can get parts on the way. The Distributer in on the front of the motor. Bolck is CI and heads are CI, Firing order 165432. Water pump appears to be centered and not part of the timing cover (it comes off without removing the timing cover). 2BBL carb-Rochester. Block CASTING number 1249432, can't find an engine number. Looked on block under driver's side head, didn't see any numbers. Coil is in the top of the Dist cap. GM alt and starter. Any ideas.

well, this is pretty basic, bordering on the obvious....

If the cap is on top of the coil, then it's an HEI ignition, after about 1974. It's carbureted, so its before about 1985. If it's a pre-feedback carb (with a mixture control solenoid), then it's probably pre-'80.

That leaves the 4.3L (a chevy 350 with 2 cylinders lopped off) but I think all those had the distributor on the back of the engine ala' chebby. Could be a 2.8L, but I don't think any were built pre-feedback carbs, and I think most of those had externally mounted coils, when not DIS. The last choice would be the 229 and 231. The 229 was a chevy motor, distributor in the back I think. Front-mounted dizzy is typical of buick.

There were 2 major variations of the buick 231 in the 70's - even fire and odd-fire; I can't remember which, but the firing order is the key there. Chevy may have had their own variant of the 231 as well - the 231/3.8L was a popular mill all the way through the 90's and went through a TON of changes. (including the legendary Buick Grand National Turbo)

Hope I didn't insult your intelligence.

I believe block # 1249432 is a 3.8L (231 CI) 1975-76, one of the earlier ones. 3.8" bore, 3.4" stroke. Odd fire.

Thanks a ton. No insult when I just don't know. The NAPA parts house didn't know either. Thanks. I was looking to put it in my daughter's midget but now I think it will go into the 54 Willeys PU.

If you're going to V6 the Midget, go with a 60* V6, like
the 2.6L, or 2.8L from Ford, or the 2.8L from GM...

Then this is a 90* V6 or the same angle of the small block V8? I did not look closely at the angle of the motor.

231, 229, 4.3L V6's were 90 degree.

the 2.8, later 3.1, and 3.4L were 60 degree V6's

Actually, if I recall correctly, there was a weird 231-ish V6 in the 60's CJ5..... a 231 might feel right at home in a willys....

Yup 60s-early 70s Jeeps had the odd-fire v6. I believe that was when Kaiser owned them (just prior to AMC) But don't quote me on that.

I want to have the Willeys running by next years Ron-de-vous. Want it purple but haven't made my mind up on the shade of purple. I am going to sell my 77 MGB to finance the PU. I have too many (oh stop it--I know what you are going to say) MGs and NO ONE to help(my son was supposed to be in on the project). I will send pictures of the Willeys as soon as I can get the camera away from herself now that the flower show season is over and she is not around to see where I stashed the PU. (It's ugly right now).

The Ford / Capri 60 deg is the best fit by far. (The water pump hangs down a bit.)

That bit hanging down there is the thermostat housing...

The "Dauntless" Buick 225 V6 was an optional engine in the late 60s for the Jeep.

Yea. that's the one. That was an odd-fire engine.
Love to see pics of the Willys. I gotta get some racks made for the CJ before Rondezvous this year, or else I won't be able to carry any tent poles.
Now I just gotta find one of those old Jeep/ military trailers.

I am going to try to order an overhauling kit for this motor. I will list it as a 75-75 Buick 2.8l V6. I think it came in the Skylark in that year. Any comments on where or who (other than NAPA) to look at for the kit. The engime has been soaking with PB but still won't move--I'll squirt some more the weekend. I may have to tear down the motor to get it to loosen up.
