Car is running great, however,......

I am getting a noise from the clutch every once in awhile.
I speculate that it is the throw out bearing. It has happened when the clutch pedal is pressed in and it has happened when the clutch pedal is not pressed in. The sound goes away when the oppisite is done. (Does that make sense?)

It has happened three times while out for a drive. Probably out of about 30 times. It will continue until the car is parked and restarted the next day.

Thoughts as to what is happening?

Which type of TO bearing do you have, carbon or roller?

It makes a grumbling sound and I can feel it in the pedal. Friday night is the last time that I drove it. It was happening when I pushed in the pedal.

I would suggest a throwout bearing going away or gone away.

Sounds like a pilot bushing dried up. Not a lot you can do except replace it.
Depressing the clutch changes the contact point.

Sounds like whether it's the throw out bearing or the pilot bearing, the solution is the same - pull the engine and replace affected part(s). Small dollar parts with a lot of effort to replace. Run it until you have clutch performance problems maybe???

Yeah, kind of wanting to drive it a bit more to see if the problem persists. ANd I'm sure it will.

Could the clutch be the culprit if it were to get a bit of oil or dirt on it?

Grumbling noises definitly sound like the TO bearing to me! It is the only part that has failed on me that has left me dead by the roadside requiring a tow!! Everything else I have managed to make a roadside repair and managed to limp home with EXCEPT that!!!

Keep in mind that the pilot bearing (end of the crankshaft to the transmission input shaft) is only engaged (turning) when the clutch throwout is released AND the transmission is in neutral.

When the transmission is in neutral but the throwout bearing is released, the pilot bearing is no longer turning or just lightly floating on the transmission input shaft.

Pilot bearing? Is this the bearing that the input shaft rides on in the front of the transmission?

This is the small brass/broze bearing that sticks in the rear end of the crank shaft.

On all of them I think.

Yes on all of them

when you do your rivergate conversion you will get a new pilot bushing to match the input shaft on the datsun box. The Datsun throw out bearing is also a roller typer so you will no longer have those issues with the graphite wearing out.
