I painted the Midget!!!

I finally got the midget painted. I have a few spots to touch up for instance the drivers side fender. I'll get those when I spray the hood. Not bad for the first car i've ever sprayed. Orange peel is rough in some places but it looks alot better than it did. Now it's time to get the carpeting, rest of the interior and engine in. I'll drive one of these some day I can taste it.

looks nice....
if its single stage,
u can sand down the rough spots
and lay another coat over it....
i repainted my hood in a hour
so its no big deal....

u also might be able to just sand
it down to 1200 grit and polish it,
but im not for sure on that theory...
.....zimmmmmy

Hey Zimmy thanks! I was checking out yours the other day it looks real nice. Unfortunately I chose metallic single stage. So i'm 90% sure I can't sand it or it will look blotchy. I'm going to try it in a spot thats out of the way and see how it works. Did you ever get that windshield in? I need a new one too the PO gave it to me with a crack from top to bottom. I'm not looking forward to that job $$!

windshield installed....see my thread.

order ur windshield from tony barnhill,
he gives BCF members a discount off MOSS
and VB .......z

Hi Hooper,

To insert an image, you have to be linking directly to an image file... something ending in ".jpg" typically.

Looks great! And, way to take the bull by the horns, starting with a metallic for your first try!

Looks nice! I like that color!! (do you have the shifter housing on the wrong way round? On the Bugeye it mounts so that the rubber grommet is horizontal!)

What type of single stage? I used a single stage Urethane which they made a clear for. So you could buff it out a bit.

u dont need clear with urethane , its kinda
like a plastic coating on the car...
ive already polished and waxed mine,
and it looks nice and deep with a near
mirror image if u find a good smooth area....z

Hi bugimike,
The shifter housing is on backwards. I actually just have it sitting there for now I still need to spray it when I get the hood and some other bits. Good catch though.

The paint I used is from eastwood and is called chop top silver. It says that it will take a clear but it's not required.

After I painted I noticed some dings and dents that I hadn't cought previously. Ideally i'd like to fill these spots and respray them. My question is i'm currently using 3M light weight filler and it's kind of tough to maneuver and sand. Is there any other products that someone can suggest that is smoother and easier to work with in this stage of the process?

I know if I don't fill those spots it will drive me nuts every day. Any suggestions?

get used to the spots...
i know ive got plenty...
putting the car back together
will give u something new
to think about! .....z

Sand the area & lay another coat! You can't hurt it!

As far as filling the dings that bother you, if you want to smooth them over, I would recommend what I use, a marine product called Formula 27 which is Bondo-like and quite easy to fair in, then re-prime and re-paint the spot!

Nothin' like a coat of shiny paint to show ya what you DIDN'T do...

I ~hate~ bodywork.

Like I have said many times, the secret to a beautiful paint job is not so much in the painting as in the prep work!!!

I've looong since quit frettin' over th' little "glitches" in any of the ones I've done. 99.99% of the folks who see the cars only know it's ~SHINY~... They've very little ability to judge a car's fit & finish. I'm my own worst critic as well. Two of the GTV's I've owned, I did fastidious coachwork on. They LOOKED like the paint was worth more than the car. Now I drive this Spider around with rust on the rockers, holes inna sides you can put yer boot thru. If I'd spend the needed time makin' it look the way I'd want, some frizzbrane in an SUV would take it away from me in traffic and I'd be up on murder charges. feh. As it is, I'd get more than the car's worth if it gets whacked. And not care.
