Recently and randomly, I notice when I open the forum there is no indication for new messages, you know, the numbers in red. Just wanted to know if anyone else has noticed this.

I have them. When it happens, are you logged in? Or viewing anonymous.
 
You might try "Marking all Read" (at the bottom of the screen) and then clearing your cookies (Under "My Stuff" menu).
