I need some carb help.

So the '63 I just got was running ok enough to get it home, but was running really and everything under the hood is a disaster. Allison ignition, alternator, and a wiring mess. But it ran. The carbs are 1968 and not correct for this car and are all cobbled together with wire and ties...argh... Take a look at the manifold. What the heck's going on there? It seems that when something went bad, patch it as best as can be patched with whatever is lying around. Anyway, Holes in manifold plugged, I have a set of AUD52 that I glass beaded in and out and are sparking clean.

Here are the troubles. I think one of my jets is out of center. The one carb. Piston drops with a nice "plunk" but the other does not and will not pull up easily. I'm assuming the jet is not centered but want to know if there are other things that might be wrong. It seems that when I drop the piston, it gets stuck in the down position.

The other issue is that gas it draining out of the overflow if the rear carb. Not sure why it is doing this. I checked the gap - .125" - and it's fine. the needle and seat are spotless without any varnish at all on them.

Lastly, the rear jet is leaking, but it is leaking where it enters the float bowl. The o-ring is not the best and moss does not sell a new one. Has anybody found an off the shelf o-ring that I can use? I had a decent one for the front carb, tightened it up and its perfect. I just don't have the couple bucks now to get new jets. The car desperately needs tires and that is what I am saving for.

I have a period Genny, and coil, new wires, plugs and a re-built dizzy so I should be in good running shape once the carb issues are resolved.

Here are the cleaned up carbs.

While you are at it, pull the motor and paint it the right color. You will also have better access to powerwash that engine bay.

Joe Curto www.joecurto.com has the part you need the flaot bowl gland is a squarish viton o rings, you need the ones he has, regualr o rings are just bandaids and work for a short while.

I know. A standard rubber O ring would work but most likely not suitable for gas. I might take a run over there and pick up a few.

Does the piston slide easily in the dome if they're removed from the carb?? Since that's a metal tube inside a metal tube if one of them is kinked or has corrosion/dirt/etc that could cause them not to easily slide against each other. I've also had one where the tube attached to the piston had come loose inside and was only attached by the needle retaining screw. And, when the damper is removed, are they filled with oil??

Right now they are not filled with oil but I do have them sliding to perfection.

Another issue I did discover are the dashpot caps are 6 sided brass and not the original knurled. One has a breather hole and the other does not. The one without has much more resistance. Should I drill it out?
