Got the wife an HP wireless printer for Christmas. Went to set it up today and within a half hour, with only expected glitches, now we can both print wirelessly from our laptops!
Stuff like that never goes right for me. I always spend half the night only to find out I have the wrong equipment, or I missed some minor step back at the start of it all.
hehehehehe. this is pretty cool.

I installed an HP wireless printer at the museum a couple weeks ago. Shared by about 20 desktops.

It was the first time IN TWENTY YEARS of network management that a wireless network printer went in flawlessly. Plugged it in, went through the menu pad "setup" procedure ... and all 20 desktops found it immediately, installed the appropriate drivers, and connected immediately. Unbelievable.

By the way, if you see the "e-print" offer, good luck. I never could get that to work right. But the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500 multi is fantastic.

Glad it worked out, though I have to say that when I saw the title I thought the post would go in a different direction. In my world it would have simply read, "I musta done something wrong.... Got the wife an HP wireless printer for Christmas." (full stop) welcome to the doghouse. :jester:

It took HP that long to figger out how to make it <span style="font-style: italic">POSSIBLE</span>. :jester:

You've obviously had to contend with JetDirect!

JetDirect! Ah the memories! (not good ...)

Back in the day:
Move from Netware 4 to 5.
Install JetDirect boxes and connect printers.
Set up print queues and print servers.
Stations can't see print queues or networked printers.
Bindery context not set on the server.
At console, type: set bindery context=ou.o
Pray.

When I set up the new HP 8500, it was all *automatic*. Yeehaa!

Now we can do it over th' phone,

Reality setting in.... It's connected, shows up on the network, but only prints at irregular random intervals. Keeps giving random error messages. We have successfully printed from both laptops, but not consistently. arrrr!

Ben - is there a range limitation to the wireless connection? Also, is there some radio interference and/or another wireless station close by?

See if the printer works fine when only one computer is using it, then screws up when the second computer tries to print. Maybe there's a problem when two try to print at once?

Range is fine (our house is small), no interference otherwise. Was not trying to print at the same time. I think it may have had to do with identification names on the router. It seem to be working more regular now that I modified a few settings. We'll see. I'm by no means a master of networking.

Great video John! hahahaha

I have used an HP printer (wired in) for a number of years now and have never really liked it. while I haven't hated it enough to get another, I find it tends to have a mind of its own. This particularly if you try to rush anything. It has always seemed to me that the spooling/ queue software is next to useless, particularly when it freezes a job but won't let you delete it. It also balks when I try to print something just after I have turned it on but before the test page was fully printed. I sometimes have to wait as much as 5 minutes before the page comes out. The scanning software that came with was always cumbersome too. I don't think I'll buy another.

Carla and I have had three different HP products through the years and have sworn to NEVER have another one. They have been pretty useless junk in our opinion.
