I love this new razor - Henson

These days I've been either a Henry's or sometimes Gillette razor user, with those multi-stacked 5-bladed razor cartridges. (more is better, right?) They worked "ok," but often I found myself not being completely happy with the smoothness of the shave and needing to follow up with my Braun electric shaver. However, I've never been thrilled with the cost of replacement cartridges ($32 US for a set of 8 replacements for my Gillette Fusion5 razor, for example).

I've been seeing these ads on YouTube and other places about a Canadian company called Henson. They make a classic single-blade safety razor, but they claim it's way better than your grandpa's old razor. These razors aren't cheap, though - the aluminum version is $69, and the Titanium one is $249. But the blades are pretty reasonable - you can get a box of 100 for $9.

During the recent "Black Friday" sales, they had their "kit" on sale for 10% off (including the razor, 100 blades, and a nice aluminum stand to set the razor on). I decided to get myself one of these Henson razor kits on sale for $115 + shipping (the aluminum version, of course).

I've been using this razor since Christmas, and I'm blown away by how smooth it makes my shave! I also picked up some of their "Leaf" shaving oil and their own shaving cream. After applying the shaving oil and cream, and then shaving with this razor, my skin feels like a baby's! I'm totally satisfied with this new Canadian-made razor. (Note, this works great for my medium whiskers, but your experience may vary.)

Obviously a good place to make such a razor as Canadian/USA relations are often a close shave. :bananawave:

You did say it was a HENSON razor.

I'll get my coat.

Back to seriousness for a sec. they say the blades will last you 2-3 years.

Are they standard safety razor size?

seems like an interesting product for sure

Well, I suspect they mean a box of 100 will last 2-3 years. Each blade probably lasts 2-3 shaves. I've been changing them once a week. When the blades are new and first installed, the razor glides over my skin like glass. As the blade gets used, it starts to tug a bit. (Yes, they are standard safety razor size. You don't have to use theirs (but I really like theirs)

I don't think Henson used a razor.

Ever since I had my finger amputated,I quit shaving (I don't have to look at myself!).
Not sure if I will in the future, but good information.

I bought one last year. It's a good razor, but I don't use Henson blades, I use Gillette Astra blades. I've been very happy with mine, it shaves better than any safety razor I've ever used before. I use a blade twice then toss it, I only shave every other day, so 100 blades lasts me quite awhile.

Just curious if you use Gillette because they're better or just because of convenience to purchase?

Both. At first it was the convience of being to just buy them on Amazon, but then I found the blades to be more consistent than the Henson blades.

Hmm, I may have to buy a pack just to try them out, but honestly so far I find the Henson blades leave little to complain about (but I don't have a super heavy beard which may be part of it.)

That razor reminds me of the old screw together Gillette I used in the Navy. I switched to the Gillette Mach3 when they first came out years ago and am totally happy with it and have no reason to change. :thumbsup2:

I can only grow stubble, stupid NDN genes. If I go all week without shaving I have almost enough growth to be an extra on Miami Vice.

I used to use a Mach 3. When I got married I was using a straight razor but as my middle son started imitating me, his mom got concerned that he'd get ahold of my razor and try to shave. So she bought me a Mach 3 for Christmas. It was a pretty good razor, both those cartridges get pricey after a bit.

I also used to carry an old screw together Gillette in my dop kit. I hated that razor; I don't know if it was just because it was old and worn out (the nickel plating was wearing through to the brass underneath in places), or because it didn't hold the blade at an optimal angle. I cut myself with that thing pretty frequently, and it irritated my skin.

This Henson is head and shoulders above both the Mach 3 and the Gillette safety razors of yore. It gives a close, smooth shave, I can't think of a time I've knicked myself with it, and it doesn't irritate my skin. I am not pulling your leg when I say that it gets pretty close to giving the same quality of shave as a straight razor.
