My wife's new computer came with Vista installed by Dell. I hate Vista. My laptop is XP and is easy to use. Can I install Linux Ubuntu on my wife's Dell or would Vista have a hissy fit and cause problems. My son has Linux Ubuntu on his laptop and loves it. Windows XP is still on the sidelines but does not interfere with Linux.
 
My new computer in the garage had XP but also had a 60-day free upgrade to Vista - I didn't!

Hope we can keep XP!
 
I don't know why you shouldn't be able to set up a minimal partition with VISTA and another with XP or Linux, or anything else on it.

FWIW my dad - somewhat a computer neophyte who had previously only used XP - has no problem with Vista at all. I got him a Gateway laptop for Christmas that had it pre-installed. It's foreign to me, but he uses it every day without problem.
 
Bill, if you still need to be able to boot Vista, there are ways of dual-booting with Linux, but there's a trick to it. I use PCLinuxOS myself, and I recall reading on their forums that Vista didn't take kindly to having Lilo or Grub installed (unlike XP), so there's a trick. Try looking on the Ubuntu forums. If you want to purge Vista completely, that's no problem :devilgrin:. I think the first two steps for me if I buy a new computer will be remove Vista and install Linux.
 
I read yesterday that Red Hat threw in the towel. No more Linux from them.

We've purchased 7 new Dell laptops in the last 12 months. On the ones they insisted we have Vista on, we upgraded to Vista Pro(or whatever) <span style="text-decoration: underline">and then were able to install a "downgrade" to XP Pro</span>. I hate Windows, period (and AutoCad, but that's another post). But the XP is the lesser of all the other MSOS evils and our network depends on it.

When we get rich (yea, right), I dream of going to Macs and Vectorworks.

Funny, when I first got a Vista machine, I hated it! I have the Ultimate version. Now with some up grades and the settings set to my preferences, I have no problems at all. My wifes new Dell lap top has it and now she likes it. Their both well protected from Internet intrusions with Norton and MS software.

Hi Doc,
I guess this falls into "Don't believe what you read on the Internet" What I read was on ZDnet (article HERE ). When I followed the link he gives where he got <span style="font-style: italic">his</span> info, it doesn't say anything about Red Hat quiting. Matter of fact, can't figure out how he came to that conclusion.

My Sons laptop has Vista on it. He asked me to fix a program he installed on it. Come to find out the program HAS to be in c:/. Well vista buried it about for directories deep And even put it in a hidden file at that! And it WILL NOT work there! I uninstalled it then tried a reinstall, NO CIGAR! VISTA INSISTS THAT THE PROGRAM BE BURIED! WHAT A P.O.S.!

I did manage to get it to work and here is how, I burned it to cd from a win98 machine then draged it from the cd and droped it on c:\ in vista. even at that, if I put the .exe icon on the desktop Vista wants to refrence the buried program {that is no longer there} The odd part is if I click the .exe inside the program in c:/ it works great. GO FIGURE!

One word for Vista ........ GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
As for me .... NO THANKS!
I`ll keep what i`m using!! At least I CAN make it do what I want! And the way I want it done!

NO WAY .... would I WASTE MY MONEY on Vista!

(weird - every single person I ask about the advantages of moving to Vista, I get just about the same response: it came with my new computer. I don't really need it.)

heh... I've a CP/M-80 set of 5-1/2" floppies and Manuals if you'd like 'em, Tom. :devilgrin:
 
Something tells me my Windows 95 and Windows 98 CDs might be a collector items in more than one way. MS-DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1 anyone?
