Tomorrow night! The L1! as any of you fellow techs know the L1(advanced engine diagnostics) ASE exam is the "nasty daddy" of the automobile series of ASEs.
Through a communication error I just found out tonight that I have to take it tomorrow!!!! AAAAKKKK!!!
I gotta go do some serious studying!!

They play "tricks" on that'n, IIRC. Be as analytical as th' OBD-II scanner!

Do they still make YOU pay to test? When it was NIASE it was so. But my "certs" went dormant in '87. Never bother'd to "re-up".

I'm a Luddite. :devilgrin:
 
Egad... I coulden't find the CD I had with the practice test on it. So If I go tomorrow It'll be totally blind. The L1 tends to be heavily geared twords domestic repair. something I'm not very well versed in. And like Doc said, they use lots of trick questions.
Not to mention a big part of the L1 is exhaust gasses. We don't use sniffers here in upstate NY, and I really don't have any experience since trade school messing with those readings.
It may be a disaster.
And yes, you have to pay for this exam. nearly $90!!!!
DOH! and double DOH!!!
 
Keep yer wits about ye and put yer gut reaction down first. Just read th' questions with no preconceived ideas.

I'd feel better if ya had th' "CliffNotes" but it ain't the end of th' planet if you gotta retest. Just the wait. With time to bone up properly. You still keep th' patch on yer arm!

Good luck, keep yer head about you and sure hope it all goes well. Going in blind can't be ideal, but such is the way of it. We're routing for you!
 
Well.. I took it. now it'll take a month before I know how I did.
It's 50/50. some of it I knew, some I guessed.(Definatly used gut reaction a lot) woulda felt better if I had been able to study first.... Oh well, there's always fall testing.
I'll be sure to post in a month about what I got.
 
You survived, at least. We'll keep our finger's crossed for you.

I, fortunately, have reached a stage in my life where the only testing I do is applied, in the field.

ASE and NIASE (and California Smog) testing and I go way back.

The largest concern I had with all of the "testing" was applicability and inaneness of some of the questions.. That and trying(usually not successfully) getting the questions corrected for the later test takers.

I finally got done with beating my head against the bureaucratic wall and turned my involvement in the industry towards a slightly diffferent direction.

ASE testing now, in my opinion, has become an income source for the testing folks, and bragging rights for the certificate and badge acquirers.

I knew(know) of many who have certificates who I would not trust under the hood of my worst enemies car. And know plenty that know how to fix cars but cannot cram for, nor "take" tests.

Sadly, ASE testing is about all the industry has(besides different manufacturers schooling and parts mfr's seminars) to show "capability" of technicians......

I was in on the early NIASE "wave", got the certs 1981. Four categories: "Engine Repair" "Manual Trans & rear Axle" "Front End" and "Brakes". 'xpired in '87.

Never bothered to retest, it started looking like a dog-n-pony show.

Stories like that got me to stay away from the auto repair industry as a mech. Little did I know that when I went into the aviation maint. field that the whole basis of the tests is on small prop planes, with a small smattering of helicopter, and jet engine. I think my entire test for my cert had 1 helicopter question and 3 jet questions.
 
I was among the first 200 in the country to have all eight of the ASE test passed for General Certification in the first year that all of the tests were finalized. I remember having my picture taken for giant collage that ASE made up at the time. I was thin and had hair then!! Our shop had 20 techs that were qualified in at least four fields and we had eight Masters.

Sadly, two of the best mechanics that I ever knew were in their 60's and never wanted to take the tests due to their reading skills. They knew more than any of us, but were afraid to fail so they just didn't do it.

After two recertification's, the last just to keep Cadillac and Lexus happy, even though I was in management, I just gave it up. I was getting out and it just didn't matter anymore.
 
I've got all 8 basics. (all due for re-cert next year AAK!)making me a Master Tec.
but have been holding off on doing the L1 for some reason. I never put a ton of stock in the ASEs personally, but, like was said, it's the only industry standard, and is kind of a "required" to get anywhere.

I just finished bashin' on bro's '94 Honda DelSol: New O2 sensor, head temp sensor and PCV valve... No codes now, money light's off, no certs needed. $100 and some time. :smirk:

The "broad brush" approach is 'cause this thing has 100K+ and the bits we replaced came with the beastie when new. Sensor was the problem, but for another $30 the other two just seem'd prudent. PCV valve was so brittle it came out in pieces.
 
I hope you did ok, Ben. The first thing that came to my mind was Dan Akroyd's first scene in "Spies Like Us".
