I found the gremlin which was making the noise

So,
following my earlier post which said I had a noise which came from below the tranny tunnel I took out the gearbox. Lo and behold the shiny bit (technical term that) in the middle of the clutch cover was loose and rattling in the "triangular finger like bits" which hold it.Great fun this , hope it drives when it's all back together! While I'm at it I thought there was some play in the clutch fork bit and have bought some new bushes and taper pin and plastic washers. Is this an easy job? How hard do you wack it to get the taper pin out?

Hi Hitch, That is a common problem with the diaphram clutches when they fail. If I remember correctly the Taper pin is just that, it is tapered and must be forcibly driven from the correct side-The Small One-.Removing the bushes takes some care and you may need to ream them to fit the shaft.---Fwiw--Keoke
 
Hi Hitch,

There is an access hole in the bell housing for using a punch or drift to remove the taper pin. Mine did not want to come out on the first go so hitting it with penetrating oil daily and may need to give it some heat to help it along (although the nylon washers will not like that one bit!). Here's a technical article on refurbishing the clutch pivot. (probably written before the suppliers carry a rebuild kit with all these parts).

Hi John, That is a pretty good article.However I do not recommend not peening the taper pin over on the small side.---Fwiw---Keoke

Double negatives always confuse me. So are you recommending peening the taper pin on the small side? If so, how is it removed in the distant future? (I think the PO may have peened the taper pin making it very tough to budge right now)

This pin is too tough to get to too! (please use the rule of Double Toos Times To to decipher)
