I do miss Gliding

As a novice, you have to be aware of "stick lift". - the unconscious easing back of the stick trying to hold altitude. You start to climb but lose speed rapidly if you persist.
 
There were a number of devices to try to compensate for stick lift.

The simplest was a device in line with the variometer (a gauge that gives the rate of rise or descent) that took into account the glider speed.
