I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers...

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

That's why I'm going to go with opa's recommendation of VHT paint that he's had on for 17 years now. If it does peel, I'm only out a $9 can of paint.

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

I talked with a local guy that does a similar coating and he said if I had sandblasted my manifold, which I had, he may could not do the coating. Wasn't sure if you had done yours.

But your bad news is our good news. Look elsewhere.

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

I thought you couldn't JetHot SS.
I was under the impression it didn't stick properly.

That's not what they told me when they did it.
Then he started spouting off the temperatures that that particular coating (silver) melted at and how the aluminum in the coating would fall off at these high temps. Like way over 1100*. Funny, the coating is still on the inside of the header. I will just try to peel it off the rest of the way. The reason I had the SS headers coated was 2-fold. I wanted to get rid of the bluing of the headers for show purposes and I wanted less heat.

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

I had my mild steel header Jet-Hot coated wth their Sterling Silver coating several years ago. It was new and they gave lifetime warranty on their product if your header was coated new. They blast it and coat it inside and out regardless, and the finish is almost mirror chrome.

I wouldn't hesitate to send them anything.

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

I think the difference is stuff just doesn't stick to SS like an above post stated. Again, they should've mentioned that to me before they took my money. He intimated that I was obviously burning very lean and I burned the stuff off. Funny, my exhaust valves are in like-new condition. They are sitting in the back of my Tahoe as we speak.

Bill: Are you serious. I hope you provided them with a suggestion as to where you would like to insert the pipes. Really man, are you suggesting that they offered no "adjustment"?
:frown:

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

Maybe it was the salesman. He just seemed oblivious. Not the kind of response I expected either. But when he started talking about my exhaust temperature approaching 1100*, I kinda just blew him off. I have measured the external temperature of my headers with the engine fully heated and running and they were in the 400*+ range. So there. I will just live with it. WAY too much trouble to take my exhaust system down right now.

Well depending on which coating was applied, what he said was true. The sterling silver is only up to 1300 degrees F, and is not recommended for headers and such. That's what the extreme sterling is for. Which coating did you have applied to the outside of the pipes?

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

Correct me if I'm wrong. The maximum temperature of your header is seen when the engine is running at high RPM under load. I've seen headers glowing red during tractor pulls and extended load testing. It's hard to say if your header ever glowed red, but it may have reached the critical temperature for the coating to break down.
My guess is the 400 degree temperature you saw was at idle after warmup or after a short drive. The issue may be the application of the wrong coating.

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

I went with what they suggested, telling him that I wanted good looks and heat control. I am not sure that Extreme Stirling was available at the time; I could be wrong.

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

You may want to push the issue with Jet Hot. After all you relied on them to guide you in your selection of coatings. I doubt they will refund any money but you can ask. Or maybe insist on they sending a voucher for recoating with no expiration date, or an extended expiration date. Something that will allow you to remove the header when you feel like it.

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

I did end up getting the Sterling on mine. No problems so far, knock on wood, but they were brand new, done inside and out, from JetHot directly.

Bill, I wonder ... do we have all the details?

I have had warranty claims with Jet Hot in the past and they have always stood by their full lifetime warranty IF you live by the application and uses.

So unless they are planning on going out of business, you might want to get your receipts, your written warranty with them, a few copies of their claims on their web site, and call them just one more time.

Then if they blow you off, call the Pennsylvania Attorney General and file a complaint.

Here they are. Again this was on a Saturday and the young(sounding) salesman was indifferent. Those are the words he spoke. After a few more words the conversation was ended. I was 50% of the cause of the sour ending.

I'd call again, M-F, regular business hours. You have no idea who's manning the phones on weekends/holidays, but usually not the crack staff. Give it a shot....

Re: I called Jet Hot about my peeling SS headers..

Bill, that situation would be unacceptable to me, and I'm sorry you have to deal with it.

I think you know your options here. You deserve a replacement product, or money back. Period.

If further verbal negotiations fail, pursue your legal options. It's not really that hard to do. Start with a business letter, send by Certified mail.

Best of luck, Bill, I hate to see this happen.
