hydraulic jack maintenance

The other day while using my 2 ton floor jack for the first time in years, when the jack was ‘up’ almost the whole way, it suddenly released its pressure and the car returned to the floor. So I figured “needs oil”. (This is my first venture into jack maintenance.) I filled the jack with hydraulic oil, but it didn’t help. Still, when it gets extended, it craps out. What did I do wrong?
Thanks in advance!

It sounds like the relief valve spring may be weak. Some have an adjustment on them, allowing you to increase the valve pop off pressure by merely turning a screw. An alternative is to shim the spring for increased installed tension. Try that and see if it helps.
