I was listening to the radio on teh way into work this morning and had to laugh. They broke to a "live" commerical for the local Ford dealer. The guy was all excited about one of the new 2009 Ford hybrids and gleefully proclaimed "This car gets 37 gallons per mile on the highway!

I especially don't want THAT hybrid!

37 MPG is not so great, but, hybrids generally achieve the best fuel economy in around-town driving.

For example, the Prius gets an alleged 50ish MPG around town, but at highway speeds it's more like 35ish.

These are approximates, but not far off.

I don't think I want to drive a hybrid on Interstate too much anyway, wind from big trucks would blow you off the road. Much like driving an LBC on interstate: it's kinda scary.

Basil- Check out Car and Drivers report on Hybrid family sedans. The new Ford Hybrid is a rather nice car and actually led in almost all categories.
That includes quickness.

Basil:

My buddy has a Pro-Stock IHRA race car and it must be a hybrid as it gets about that (37 Gallons per Mile)

If that's the case, I'm keepin' my old truck.

You missed the joke. He didn't say 37 "Miles per Gallon" he said 37 "GALLONS per mile!"

I can see the signs out in the desert now. "last gas station for 3/10 of a mile, plan accordingly."

Mark, Being a Toyota certified hybrid technician I gotta comment. MPG varies wildly in hybrids with the effects of temprature, fuel, and the terrain you live in. You are correct that Toyota hybrids get better milage in town that highway, and commonly here in the foothills Priuses still get over 40MPG highway and usually around 45 or so in the city. Of course that all drops off by an average of 5MPG this time of year.
But as for being blown off the road. Any hybrid tends to weigh 10-20% more than a standard car of the same size due to the hybrid system. The battery pack alone weighs around 200 Lbs.,The hybrid transmission with all the motors in it is extremely heavy. The first generation Priuses (the one Top Gear set on fire) were equipped with extra load tires to accomidate the added weight.
I doubt you'll get blown around too much.
The highlander hybrids get what seems to be a dismal 30-32 MPG. but you have to remember that that vehical was an excersise in hybrid performance. At 30 MPG it has V8 towing capabilities, and acceleration that will pin you in the seat.
But I still believe there is lots of room for improvement.

Sheesh, our old amtrac's (LVT P-5's) would get 8 gallons per mile on the road, and 4-6 in the water).. gotta get one of those new hybrids, one large enough to haul a fuel tank behind me..

People! Scroll back up and REREAD the post c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y! As the song says "Your eyes do deceive you, there's something going wrong around here!!" The man said "GALLONS per mile" NOT "MILES per gallon....."

Thanks for the smile Basil!

Whether it is gallons per mile or miles per gallon, it's still rubbish. My wife's Morris Traveller does 45mp(British)g. Modern cars are so full of air bags, air conditioning and computers that they weigh far too much.

Still trying to figure out what all the fuss over hybrids' mpg is about.

I've been getting 35mpg (winter) 40mpg (summer) in my Mazda Protege's since I started buying them in 1990. Great little cars.

Can't figure why I'd pay a premium for a hybrid, that's smaller and gets fewer mpg than I get now.

Altho' "back in the day" I knew a widow who drove a red Buick convertible. Said she averaged a couple males per gallon.

Hehehe, by comparison, a Viking 65' can get 2 GPM! Positively economical, even with higher priced diesel!
