So we have this heat pump thing that I hate. It's on the sunny side of the house and I was wondering if I could make it more efficient by making a temporary greenhouse type structure that will warm the air around it during daytime operation. this structure would still allow a clear air discharge path and allow outside air to be drawn in. Does anyone see any problems with this?

When was the last time it was charged? You shouldn't have to cover it to block the wind or anything. Have a technician look at it. PJ

It works fine. I was thinking it would work better if the air around it was warmer and that also may help cut down on the defrost cycle.

You just said "It works fine." If it aint busted don't fix it.

I just want to make it work with more betterment.:friendly_wink:

If it pulls heat out of the air around it, then it would make more betterment if that incoming air temp was raised.

If you build a greenhouse over it and put a wood burning stove inside with it, you will see a marked improvement.

Actually I have no idea

Since you are allowing air to be drawn in and discharged the greenhouse will quickly adjust to the be the same temp as the surrounding air. Unless the greenhouse is very large and you are only using the air wihin it the benefit will probably not be worth the effort.

No, it will be blown clear of the greenhouse out the top. I was thinking about something as tall as the unit.

I can't see this being of much benefit. Heat pumps are A/C's in reverse and they push an awful lot of air thru. You MIGHT have a second or two of slightly warmer air. Why do you have a heat pump in the first place? Natural gas is sooooo cheap around here.

Cause you gotta have a line run to ya. We live out inna country and propane is the the only other way besides wood (which I'm not allowed to have).

It would warm up the unit and the stone wall behind it as well. The air coming into the structure would pull heat from the glass panes and from the wall as well as the warmer steel enclosure of the pump. The main idea is to keep it from having to go through its defrost cycle as the sun should be able to thaw the unit instead.
